Learning to Conserve Energy. . . .

As some of you might of heard Juneau had a tough week, on Wednesday our only power source was taken out by an avalance. The entire city is being run by diesel generators. A mile and a half of power lines were wiped out and won't be able to be reached for repairs for about 3 weeks. Then it will take about 8 more weeks to repair them. So for the next 3 to 4 months our electricity is going to be powered by generators - instead of costing us 11 cents a kilowatt, we are now paying 50 cents a kilowatt! We are learing to conserve energy - yes, we still have power, it is just really expensive power. We have been un plugging / turning off everything possible - that includes the TV, computer, toaster, cell phone chargers and leaving the lights off. We are only doing the most necessary laundry and short showers! But the good news is the electric company said they could tell by the daily electricity usage, everyone is cutting way back and the city has submitted an application for disaster funding! We are crossing our fingers! (You are probably wondering why I am posting a blog, if I am trying to conserve energy - I am really trying to hurry!!)

Then on Thursday we got another foot of snow!! We thought spring was on its way, but as Dad reminded me, we do live in Alaska!! Below are pictures of me cleaning off my car as it continues to snow!!

Mark watches Caitlin on Thursday's and Fridays. He took Caitlin for a walk out to the Glacier on Friday - can you see the difference in the weather in less that 24 hours! ( New sunglasses for Caitlin - what do you think!?)

Saturday turned out to be beautiful and SUNNY!! So we took our boat out for a spin. Below is Mark and I taking turns driving :)Caitlin was ready for the ride - all bundled in.It was like glass everywhere! The boat ride put Caitlin right to sleep. Us, in our cool pink sunglasses! Daddy and Caitlin ( and yes, Caitlin has a life jacket and yes, she wears it on the boat, with the exception of being in her car seat. We had just changed her diaper, when we took these pictures! I just realized that every picture we have of Caitlin she is not wearing her life jacket. . . . not good. )
There were humpback whales out for a spin as well.

To top the day off, we checked our shrimp pots on the way back to the docks. We had set them first thing today and there were shrimp already!! Look how big they are! Great dinner and great way to end the weird week!

We love you all and hope all is well on your end!
