Muddy Buggy Hike to Cowee Creek (June 2012)

During the first weekend of June we took advantage of some beautiful sunshine and headed down the Point Bridget State Park Trail to the Cowee Meadows Cabin. This was a long hike, 3.5 miles one way! But it is fairly flat so we thought it was perfect for the kids.

It started off great - the kids hiked along at a steady pace! Even had smiles on their faces!!

And then the bugs started to attack. . . I am talking swarms of mosquitoes!! On went the hats and long sleeves went down!

Posing for me!

Andrew wanted in on the action! This was a tough spot - the mud became pretty deep and the kids had to be carried. We had taken the path through the trees but it was a rooted, muddy mess.

She found some pretty flowers in the meadows!

Whew! We made it out of the woods and into the meadows where the kids could walk again - just a little muddy!

Brew prancing in the meadows - in the background you can see a cabin. This is actually Echo Ranch Bible Camp :)

We wandered passed the cabin to the ocean~

Time for Brew to swim (clean off the mud) and rock skipping!

This is the cabin in the back ground - we had a nice little lunch and headed back out into the woods prepared for bugs!

At least they still had smiles!!

Horses grazing in the meadows!
There are no pictures from the hike back. Instead of hiking through the woods and tromping through muddy/rooted paths we decided to take a new trail that looked to have a few puddles on it. Puddles. Huh. This was a full fledged lake - the beavers had dammed up the lake so water was over flowing on the trail. We had gone about a mile in and were calf to knee high in standing water. Caitlin was on Mark's shoulders, Andrew was on mine. Once we were that far it was too late to turn around and head for the mud. We made it through! It was an adventure for sure and I don't think I'll be taking that trail again any time soon!!
