Trip to Handtollers Cove

We have been making our own traditions for the Sanders family -each summer we head to our favorite cabin the Rupe Andrew's Memorial Cabin at Handtrollers Cove on Shelter Island. We headed this year on a Friday morning and stayed until Sunday afternoon. The weather was absolutely beautify and we had an exceptionally amazing time. Below is a brief summary of the trip~
Caitlin got a pink soccer ball to kick around on the beach - She got it right before we left on the boat, she was all excited about her new ball!We take a 20 minute boat ride out of Amalga Harbor and then take our small skiff to the beach. Mark takes numerous trips to get all our "stuff" to the beach.Once we unloaded the boat we headed out to pull our shrimp pots and do some fishing. We were successful getting shrimp but the fishing (both salmon and halibut) were a little slow.My little Mandrew (working on his second tooth).Little crabs from the shrimp pot. . . Mark and his little friends the crabs!Caitlin and her shrimps! She loves these guys now and is not afraid of them one bit! After a long day of fishing we headed back to camp for some BBQ dinner and relaxing.Caitlin and Andrew spent quite a bit of time outside - there were barely any bugs around!
Caitlin loved the second bed (basically a bunk bed that sleeps 10 people) she had the whole second story to herself! Us! (Andrew adores Caitlin and is always looking her way!)After dinner mark and Caitlin went down the water to clean the shrimps. This involves pulling the heads of the shrimp. Caitlin watched Mark a few times and then joined right in. She was pulling the heads of shrimp with no issues at all! Such a girly girl - right!Getting a little shade from the sun!My goofy girl!Mark built me a camp fire both nights and we roasted marshmallows for s'mores! This is a perks for me because a lot of time it is too wet in Juneau to have a fire!A beautiful sunset with our boat in the water.Oh day two! It started off with a bang. We decided to halibut fish for a while and then if there was no action, head for king salmon fishing. Well Mark got a hit like you wouldn't believe. He pulled in the biggest halibut we have ever gotten on our boat.
62 inches long estimated at 121 lbs (per the tide book)! Caitlin calls it the dada fish!Too big to fit in the live well on the boat! We had to tie the fish off to the boat and put it back in the water! We also had to keep an eye on it, there were lots of sea lions swimming near by!Back at camp with the fish! This is where we tried to get our official measurement (with a fishing rod and then compared it to my height :) ) We cleaned the fish at camp and fortunately we brought gallon zip lock bags to bag up the fish and put it in the cooler (we needed 8 of them).Pretty impressive! After the fish was cleaned, dinner was devoured we headed for a walk on the beach! Can you see his first tooth!?!?Hanging out in the cabin. . . .On Sunday we spent the morning relaxing and packed everything up. Eventually we headed out to pull the shrimp pots and then headed for the crab pots at Eagle Beach (back towards Amalga Harbor). We were pretty successful! I even pulled in a pot! This was the biggest dungee crab! After we headed for some more trolling and relaxing in the sun. It was quite warm on the water on Sunday. The wild life we saw this weekend had by far the most variety. We had bald eagles, blue heron, blue jays, woodpeckers, sea otters, sea lions, seals, porpoises, crabs, shrimps, halibuts. . . . .
Humpback whales! They were everywhere and very active! Some spent quite a bit of time right in Handtrollers Cove. . . that is a humpback whale right off the bow of our boat!
They were feeding and playing all day and night! It was amazing to wake up early in the morning and see/hear whales right off the deck of the cabin.
I took a billion pictures but the next two were some of the best shots I have taken in a while!
They are very majestic creatures and fascinate me!

Hope you enjoy! We have lots of visitors this summer and quite a few adventures to look forward too! We'll be back soon~ Love you all!

You must realize that millions of people all over the world never get to experience even two or three of those pictures let alone all of them in one weekend! The whale tail, the shrimp, the dungy's, the cabin, the sunset(with boat), and oh yes, the monster halibut! Dad

What a fab weekend!!! Isn't it so nice to be able (in the right place at the right time and healthy enough to be there) and willing to enjoy the bounties of nature like that. ...and for the whole family to share in it! Super cool. A pink soccer ball on the beach and pulling shrimp heads beats the heck out of video games (the average american child entertainment) any day! Thanks for sharing!!!

Love you guys!
