Chicago Bound (August 2012)

At the beginning of August I traveled to Chicago for a work conference (National Conference of State Legislators - National Summit). I arrived late on Sunday evening and on Monday hit the convention center. Prior to leaving I had found an amazing ticket to a White Sox game!
The Chicago White Sox vs the Kansas City Royals
My seat was on the third base line - second row!
Just a few home run fireworks displays!
Me! The White Sox won the game- it was fun to be surrounded by these Chicago fans! They love their team :)
One afternoon I made it out to the Sears Tower (now known as the Willis Tower). It is third tallest building in the world - 1,353 feet in the air! What an amazing view!!
View of Downtown Chicago and Lake Michigan
They also have these three ledges (boxes) that extend out 4.3 feet from the Skydeck (viewing floor is on the 103rd floor).
I did it! I stood out on the ledge :)
For the conference's Windy City Welcome we headed to the Museum of Science and Industry. We had exclusive access to the museum with Chicago style dinner and music
~Wind Tunnel~
GIANT avalanche simulator - think big!

They even had a John Deere tractor - Andrew would have loved it!
Who actually knows what is in a Twinkie?? These are still my favorite!
Floating balls~
I think my hair was floating in the air!
A view from the top
~My boss David,  his wife Sally and I joined up for the bike ride along Lake Michigan and through the city early in the morning!
Beautiful view and it was so warm! I also participated in the Walk for Wellness 5K run on the next morning!
One evening David, Sally and I went out for a Brazilian dinner - if you have not tried this, I highly recommend it. Such a fun experience!! First off, the sparkling wines and cheese paring was delicious. Second, the salad bar was full of specialty choices - think apples with some type of yogurt and spices, sauteed mushrooms with a cheese crumble and more! Lastly, they have rocks in the middle of the table, when you are ready to eat you take the rock out (put it back in the dish when you need a break!). The chef's bring you 12 (yes twelve!) different types of meat - duck, lamb, venison, sausage, swordfish, catfish, salmon (not fresh - therefore I didn't try!), steaks, pork, chicken and more! The meats were delish!! Then we and a group of friends headed to a show on Navy Pier.  The show was called Cirque Shanghai - Year of the Dragon. These acrobats were incredible - the balancing skills were unreal. If you are ever in Chicago I highly suggest watching these people preform.
There was flipping through the air and landing on people upside down! It's hard to explain and the pictures don't do it justice.
This giant ball is metal and had 5 motorcycles with people on them inside of it - whirling around!!
Beautiful designs.
On the last evening there was a farewell event at Millennium Park. So while I was there I had to stop by and see the bean :)
The theater for live music for the farewell event  - if you know what Lollapalooza is, this is where it takes place (it was also the weekend before my trip!).  When I arrived it was sprinkling and they handed me a plastic poncho - you know, the type the tourist wear in Juneau. I kinda giggled. Well about 20 minutes later it was dumping. The thunder and lightning show was incredible on the sky line and I headed for the closest taxi to the restaurant Carmine's. (And yes,, the poncho went on!) Carmines is a unique Italian place that I would highly recommend. The walk back to my hotel was down the Magnificent Mile too :) I had a great time at the conference, met a lot of new people and really enjoyed my time exploring Chicago.
