Sweethearts Creek - Sockeye Fishing (August 2012)

(Excuse the sideways picture - I can't get it to turn on the blog). Mark and his friend Ty headed up to Sweetheart's Creek to sockeye fish the first weekend in August. They headed out on Friday morning and ran into rough weather along the way. They ducked into Taku Harbor for a break from the weather. After a good break they headed back out. They arrived at Sweetheart Creek and decided to head to the beach and fish for the afternoon. They were catching sockeye but it was getting late, so they packed up their fish and headed back to the raft. Well, Sweetheart Creek is full of bears - brown bears. And one was not to happy with Mark's raft.
They found the raft crumpled up in a small ball  with the kicker upside down on the beach. It had huge slashes in it and puncture holes.
Even the kicker has bite marks and scrapes from claws in it.
Can you see the marks!?! Apparently, the bear was not too far away still pacing the beach. Don't worry, both Ty and Mark had gun protection and no bears  ended up being harmed. They were able to flag down another fisherman to get a ride back to our boat for the night. Thankfully they were alright and they also came home with some fish. The raft is being replaced. . . but from the sounds of it, they were not the only fishermen with their raft attacked. Another guy in Juneau posted a Craig's list add offering a reward for whoever could bring back their kicker - they had to leave it behind. CRAZY! I don't think I'll be joining the boys on this trip anytime soon :0)
